Edwin van der Sar has resigned from his role as Ajax chief executive after seven years in the job.
He commented on the decision: "We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.
" feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn't feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign."
Ajax generally enjoyed success with Van der Sar but the last season was a disappointment.
The team only finished third in the Eredivisie, something that hadn't happened for 14 years. They were also out of the Champions League and, subsequently, out of the Europa League pretty fast.
