'We hit rock bottom and it’s impossible to go deeper down': Gattuso sacked by Olympique Marseille

Marseille have decided to part ways with former Milan and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, as reported by sources including L’Equipe and Fabrizio Romano. The decision comes after Marseille's 1-0 loss to Brest on Sunday, despite having a numerical advantage since the 60th minute.

Gattuso took over the reins at Marseille in September 2023, succeeding Marcelino. However, the team has struggled, securing no victories since January and only accumulating three points in the last five matches, marking their worst performance since 1978, according to Gazzetta.

In a disappointing trend, Marseille failed to register a shot on target in three of their last four games, including the recent loss to Brest. Gattuso acknowledged the team's poor form and issued an apology to the fans during a post-match press conference on Sunday.

"Soul is needed in football, but we lack it. I must be honest and say we do not deserve this jersey. We can’t play with the mentality. I apologize to the fans. We hit rock bottom, and it’s impossible to go deeper down," stated Gattuso.

Having previously coached teams like Palermo, Pisa, Milan, and Napoli in Serie A, Gattuso's departure marks a challenging chapter in Marseille's quest for success.
