'If he'd worked with Pep, he would've made some steps earlier': Arsenal player impressed Guardiola as a 16-year-old

In 2015, Martin Odegaard took the world of football by the storm when he joined Real Madrid at just 16 years old.

The Norwegian prodigy had a choice between Madrid and Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich, eventually opting to move to Spain.

A series of loans with various degrees of success followed and it was only years later that Odegaard found his footing after signing for Arsenal.

Michael Reschke, a former Bayern scout, believes the midfielder would not have had to wait so long if he had signed for the Bundesliga giants and played under Guardiola.

Reschke told The Athletic: "At 16, he trained with Pep, who was totally impressed after the first training. I came into the dressing room and Pep was talking about how intelligent he was and how he would improve.

"Odegaard was the type of player Pep loved. He was completely convinced. We were both pretty sure we wanted to sign him, but he had the decision between Real Madrid and Bayern.

"I had a present in my professional life, working with Pep for two years. I saw him work with players like Kingsley Coman and if you are a young, talented player there is one thing that is pretty sure.

"Guardiola will make you a better player — the best player you can possibly be. He is not from this world as a coach. I am sure if Martin had worked with Pep, he would have made some steps earlier."
