'Almost fought some Spurs fans at the pub I was in': Tribuna.com's fans share amusing stories on why and when they started supporting Arsenal

Henriquez: "It's quite funny on how I started supporting Arsenal. I was actually a Liverpool fan and we met Arsenal in the Champions League that was in 2005 and Liverpool won 2:1. Funny enough I became angry that Liverpool won even as a Liverpool fan. So since that night, I became an Arsenal fan."

shasha: "I started following Arsenal in 1994. My wife & her entire family were Man United supporter. I hated that. I saw an Arsenal match & just loved the way they played. 'Been a loyal gunner ever since. Love this team 🔫"

Allan Shimmon: "I was 10 years old and never looked back, so for 50 years the ARSENAL have been my team."

Ares: "2004. Visited England while in the Navy. Watched the April 9th game vs Liverpool. Was amazed by Thierry Henry and the others. Almost fought some Spurs fans at the pub I was in. Arsenal fans stepped in since I was obviously a foreigner and settled things down. I’ve been a fan ever since."

"Let it be: "My father, the late Mr Chitafu Cosmos Sr, supported Arsenal till his death. He supported the Gunners for reasons that I also have.

  • 1. Mutual respect by both the team management and it's supporters
  • 2. The team look young but it's the oldest in premier League which has never been relegated.
  • 3. The philosophy is by principle..when you understand it, you will never have BP when the loses.
  • 4. I have never experienced an open exchange of blows among the players.
  • 5. You can not compare the colour of our jersey with any team..ours is the cleanest and the best.
  • 6. The way the jersey looks clean, that is the how clean the brains for players, supporters and management.
  • 7. Forever a gunner."

G4: "I read much about Thierry Henry in Arsenal shirt and the Invincibles story and I fell In love with the Gunners. If I am to marry in future my wife must know that Arsenal come 1st and she comes next. I can’t explain the love I have for this club. It is my wish that one day I will watch a match from the Emirates in that Stadium 🏟 ."

Derek Tolliday: "My dad was 15 during the world war II and was too young to go and was sent to Highbury as part of some home guard and used to watch the reserves train. Hence he became an Arsenal supporter.

"Obviously he influenced me greatly so that’s where my allegiance started. He took me to the 1971 FA cup final and I watched Charlie George score a magnificent goal. The rest is history. 58 years as a Gooner and still going strong."

Denzil Cavaliere: "When I was 5 years old, my Dad who likes a bargain bought me a football shirt for Christmas. All our family were Spurs fans. I wore my shirt down to Grandads on Xmas morning and he blew his top! Dad was not into Football and thought he had bought a Spurs shirt.

"You see, Grandad was born outside of White Hart Lane when his mum was being rushed to a maternity place but didn't make it. So always being an independent thinker, I declared I am an Arsenal fan. And that was it."

Gooner John: "In 1971 as a young boy, I saw a clip on TV about Arsenal doing the double. Now in New Zealand, in the ’70s if it wasn’t rugby it wasn’t news, so to have this clip of a double-decker bus with cups and players on prime time news (albeit some days after the actual event) and then an article in the paper (Dad pointed it out) made me think about it a lot.

"I decided then and there, I wanted to support Arsenal and did through the good, the lean and the bad years. 49 years later I still support them without question as do my children. So it’s from the cradle (almost 😀) to the grave for me."

#Numerounodiehardgunnersgal: "It all started way back when I was watching Euro96 and David Seaman saved so many goals. Then I asked my husband what team did Seaman play for and "BAAM" that was it ARSENAL! Everyone calls me 'Madam ARSENAL' and I'm proud of it!"

GODWIN EDEH: "I started supporting arsenal on 5/5/1996 when Arsenal was taking on Bolton Wanderers. Dennis Bergkamp goal against Bolton got my attention and I said wow, this is where football lives. The match ended 2-1 in favour of arsenal and ever since then, I'm a gunner and no regret about my choice at all."

Arthur Mills: "I started to support The Arsenal when taken to my first game by my elder brother when I was 9 years of age. Cannot remember who we were playing but remember that we had just signed for a record fee of £14000 Welsh international Bryn Jones. the year was 1938. I'm now 91years of age & have been an Arsenal fan all my life."

Afonso Muchanga: "In the '80s, when I was a school teenager, I used to read the main daily newspaper in my home town, Maputo. One day, on the sports page, there was an article on the main European championships, and a focus was made on an Arsenal player called PAUL DAVIS, with a picture of him.

"It was a very awesome photo, showing Paul in a stylish way in the Arsenal jersey. I was so impressed that I started considering the Gunners as my team in Europe. Paul Davis is not part of the historically outstanding Arsenal players, but to me he has a special status for this reason. And then, the Arsène Wenger Era came, and we know what happened then."

raymond dennis: "I started supporting Arsenal in 1952. I lived in what is now Harringay. My mates and I used to stand outside the ground on match days listening to the oohs and ahs of the crowd and hoping the loudest cheers were for Arsenal scoring.

"One day a mate's dad paid for my mate and me to go in, it was just magical. Since that day it has always been Arsenal. I am now 78 and have been to nearly all of Arsenal's big matches, including the champions league final. We didn’t win a thing for 17 years until we won the Fairs Cup in 1970 and then the double in 1971.

"I was lucky enough to be at Highbury when we won the Fairs Cup and at Wembley and White Hart Lane when we won the double. I still go to the matches and have my season ticket."

Ed Wood: "4th generation supporter. Great Grandad saw them play at the Woolwich. I was never going to support anyone else 🤣"

David Stanton: "I was taken to my first game in February 1958 Man United the Busby Babes before the Munich crash, it was a wonderful game even though we lost 4-5 and of course I fell in love with the Gunners I was only 9 but have been a supporter through thick and thin."
