Ancelotti names exact moment Lunin benched Kepa for good

There's no more debate on who Real Madrid's first-choice goalkeeper is until Thibaut Courtois returns form injury. It's Andriy Lunin.

Asked about how Lunin managed to overtake Kepa in the pecking order, Ancelotti said: "It all started when Kepa got injured. We saw Lunin in action."

Kepa picked up that injury back in November ahead of Real Madrid's game against Braga in the Champions League.

The Spanish goalkeeper returned a month later, but his form has never been the same as he's been culpable for some calamitous errors in goal for Real Madrid, notably against Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup.

Meanwhile, Lunin has continued to shine when given an opportunity. The 24-year-old has conceded just 13 goals in 15 games while recording six clean sheets. The Ukrainian has also helped prevent six goals Real Madrid should've conceded.

What it means for Kepa is that Real Madrid are unlikely to make his loan from Chelsea permanent in the summer. Meanwhile, Lunin would be expecting a new contract.
