Five Man United players who can thrive in new 'possession-heavy' style - based on key stat

Man United’s new hierarchy have reportedly decided upon what should be the club’s ‘philosophy’ when it comes to the playing style.

The new technical director, Jason Wilcox, has reportedly informed Erik ten Hag that he should implement a more ‘possession-heavy’ playing style.

The new sporting department, set up by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, wants Man United to play possession-based football and really dominate games going forward.

Of course, the club will make future signings based on this philosophy, but there are quite a few existing players who can also excel in this new style.

For any possession-based side, there is a need for players who have the best passing accuracy and complete the most number of passes in every game.

With that being said, here we’ll look into the existing five Man United players who can probably impress in this method – by using their passing accuracy stats (from the Premier League) and having played at least 20 matches this season.

Raphael Varane is actually the Man United player with the highest passing accuracy in 20+ PL games this season. He’s averaged an impressive 89.2% with 36 average passes per game.

Behind him in this aspect is defender Harry Maguire (50 passes per game) and he has managed a decent 83.6% passing accuracy.

Diogo Dalot has also been really impressive with an 83.5% passing accuracy in 31 Premier League appearances, managing over 40 passes per game.

Casemiro (83% passing success) and Scott McTominay (81.6% passing rate) complete the top-5 Man United players with the highest accuracy – showing they have the ability to distribute the ball around nicely when in hold of possession.

Kobbie Mainoo, meanwhile, has also managed an 85.3% passing accuracy in 19 matches and is probably best suited for a possession-based style knowing his skill set.

These players can probably do well in the kind of style which Ineos wants to implement and it remains to be seen if the Red Devils can totally dominate games on a consistent basis going forward.
