Why Andre Onana puts Vaseline on his gloves

Andre Onana was made to work overtime in Man United’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday (April 7).

He made six saves and needed to be at his sharpest all through the course of the match because of how relentlessly the opposition side attacked his goal.

However, at one point in the game, Onana was caught on camera putting Vaseline on his gloves.

This could predictably attract mockery, with some fans trying to indicate that this causes the goalkeeper's butterfingers.

However, there is actually logic behind Onana’s action. That is because Vaseline basically tends to get sticky when its wet and helps to strengthen the grip of a goalkeeper’s gloves.

As a result, it makes it easier for goalkeepers to grip their hands onto a football – helping them collect crosses, take quick throws or hold onto the ball when making saves.

The downside to putting Vaseline on a goalkeeper’s glove is that it deteriorates the condition of the gloves faster, but that’s hardly an issue for someone like Onana, who probably wears different pairs of gloves in every match.

With his heroics against Liverpool, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has now made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
