'He wanted to come here': Lazio president slams Man United for failed Greenwood transfer

Lazio President Claudio Lotito has claimed that Manchester United's delay hampered Mason Greenwood's potential move to the Serie A club.

"I tried until the last minute,” Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi.  “They didn’t countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio."

According to reports, a delay in processing the required documents meant that the necessary paperwork was not submitted before the 7pm deadline in Italy.

This allowed Getafe to swoop in and seal a season-long loan for the 21-year-old forward.

Greenwood has been training with a personal trainer and hasn’t played a competitive match since January 2022.

That month, the England international was charged with attempted rape, domestic violence and controlling behaviour.

Last February, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges following the withdrawal of witnesses.  United conducted their own six-month investigation into the situation, though ultimately a decision was made to send the forward out on loan.

Greenwood is eligible to make his Getafe debut against Osasuna – their first match after the international break.

Getafe kicked off their season with a goalless draw against Barcelona. Since then, the club lost 3-0 away in Girona before beating Alaves 1-0 at home.
