'I feel like I'm suffocating': Varane explains reason for shock international retirement

Raphael Varane surprised many by announcing that he would be retiring from international football at the age of 29.

Speaking to Canal+ about the reason behind his decision, he said: “I gave everything, physically and mentally. But the very highest level is like a washing machine, you play all the time and you never stop

“We have overloaded schedules and play non-stop. Right now, I feel like I’m suffocating and that [Varane] the player is gobbling up [Varane] the man.”

Varane struggled with a lot of injury issues last season and even earlier in this campaign. It appears that he wanted to retire to avoid this injury nightmare and preserve himself better.

This decision can only benefit Man United, as he’ll be fully focused on helping the Red Devils win trophies going forward. Varane had a glittering international career, winning the World Cup and UEFA Nations League with France.
