'I feel like I'm suffocating': Varane explains reason for shock international retirement

 surprised many by announcing that he would be retiring from international football at the age of 29.

Speaking to Canal+ about the reason behind his decision, he said: “I gave everything, physically and mentally. But the very highest level is like a washing machine, you play all the time and you never stop

“We have overloaded schedules and play non-stop. Right now, I feel like I’m suffocating and that [Varane] the player is gobbling up [Varane] the man.”

Varane struggled with a lot of injury issues last season and even earlier in this campaign. It appears that he wanted to retire to avoid this injury nightmare and preserve himself better.

“Each time I wore this special blue jersey, I felt immense pride. The duty to give everything, to play with my heart and to win every time we enter the field. I have been thinking about it for several months and decided that it was the right time for me to retire from international football.

“I will miss these moments with you (the fans) for sure, but the time has come for the new generation to take over. We have a group of talented young players who are ready to take over, who deserve a chance and who need you.”

 during his international career with France, helping them get to the finals of the 2022 World Cup as well.

After making his debut for France in March 2013, the centre-back made 93 appearances for his national team and scored 5 goals.

Gotta respect his decision, especially after winning it all already.  This is why so many players look older than they are.  Glad he will be able to give more for us now

Very honest man, I hope he will help us bring silverware back to Manchester United, people said players like him and Casemiro came for a retirement package and you can now see they still have more in the tank and mean business..

I really hope to see him win medals with us, he deserves it especially after retiring from the honour of international football, it couldn't have been an easy decision
