Within minutes after the legend's passing was confirmed, the club issued a tribute to the Brazilian on social media.

Pele, the only player to have won the World Cup three times and one of two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century award, passed away aged 82 on Thursday, December 29.

 legend Pele revealed something he had never spoken before: at the peak of his career, 

"Manchester! I even had a proposal from Manchester United," he said

"Manchester United? Really?" the reporter asked incredulously.

That year, a 28-year-old Pele would've joined Sir Matt Busby's team that defeated 

 final to win the competition for the first time.

This is the team that started the final at Wembley (and yes, they played in blue)

However, the Brazilian had no regrets that he rejected Man United, as well as every other club, including 

"No, no, no. I said no to every team who asked me," he added. 

"Real Madrid was the best team who wanted me. They were a very good team. But I didn't want to leave 

When asked if this really happened, an Old Trafford spokesman said at the time: "There is nothing official in our records but this club has always been looking to attract the best players in the world - and Pele is clearly in that category."

So, Pele remained at Santos until 1974 before spending a couple of years with New York Cosmos. He never played for a European club.

The only three-time World Cup winner passed away on Thursday, December 29, at the age of 82.

Pele clearly was the Greatest Footballer Of All Time. No other comes close, except maybe Maradona to some extent. Diego was more Energetic but Pele was more Skillful and Sublime. A great human.
