Speaking to The Athletic, Alan Shearer said: "Harry Maguire has barely been playing, while his performance in England's 3–3 draw with Germany in the UEFA Nations League back in September hardly inspired confidence.
"Picking him in your starting XI would represent a huge gamble, but Maguire is not an isolated example. There is a wider feeling of rustiness and insecurity. I suspect Gareth Southgate will go with three at the back. I wouldn't."
Maguire is back to full fitness and the centre-back has been getting minutes lately now that Raphael Varane is out with a serious hamstring injury.
The Manchester United skipper is set to be included in England's 26-man squad for the World Cup but it remains to be seen whether he will be a starter in Qatar.
