'The game has evolved': Glen Johnson believes Mourinho is no longer an elite manager

Speaking to the Mirror, Jose Mourinho's former player Glen Johnson said: "The game has evolved. When he first turned up at Chelsea he was like a rough diamond and nobody had seen a character like him.

"No one that I knew had ever played under a manager like him, in terms of the way he was explosive and the way he would hold meetings and his tactics, which were unbelievable.

"I think it was like a breath of fresh air, but younger managers have now learned from him, caught up with him, got onto a level playing field and now he's got a new option. I think the game has evolved and he hasn't moved on a little bit with it."

The 58-year-old returned to Italy in the summer but things are not looking up at the moment with his AS Roma side winning one of their last seven games.

There is a little bit of Mourinho revisionism going on among the Manchester United fanbase at the moment amid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's struggles to get the best out of his talented squad.

The Portuguese remains the last Man United manager to claim silverware, winning the Europa League final in 2017 with the likes of Antonio Valencia, Daley Blind and Marouane Fellaini in the starting XI.
