"One week before the window closed, he [Telles] asked to leave because he wanted to go to Manchester," Porto president Pinto da Costa has said to TVI.
"I tried to keep him, I tried to compensate him, even if it was to stay until the end of the year. But it's not possible to keep a player who takes over publicly and before me and my management he wanted to leave.
"The argument for leaving is that the current coach of Brazil [Tite] only called players from three or four championships [excluding the Portuguese one]. I tried to contradict because he was at the national team at that time," Da Costa noted.
Alex Telles joined Manchester United in a €15m move on the transfer deadline day.
Indeed, the left-back was part of the Brazil squad in October. The 27-year-old featured as a substitute in the World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.
