Marouane Fellaini lends former side Standard Liege €3m to save them from relegation

Former Man United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has shown to have a real heart of gold by helping out struggling former side Standard Liege stay active after the coronavirus pandemic left them in a difficult position financially.

According to the Daily Mail – citing Belgian media – Fellaini has given his former side €3m (£2.6m) to help them avoid financial ruin and gain the necessary licenses to participate in the Jupiler Pro League next season.

The Belgian first-division was also cancelled recently causing more problems for Liege, who were in the verge of getting into serious trouble after being unable to pay premium payments to their players.

Liege were on the verge of being relegated into the amateur divisions before Fellaini came with this vital donation to help them survive during these tough times.

The club had asked former players to come forward and help them get out of this difficult situation and the youth academy graduate, who was among the first to come forward with such a sizeable donation.

Fellaini is currently playing at Shandong Luneng in China and recently recovered from the coronavirus, being the only Chinese Super League player to test positive for the deadly virus.
