7 April, 1999: Man United vs Juventus. Match blog of Champions League semifinal first leg

Welcome to the live coverage of our Champions League clash against Juventus. It's April 1999, Man United are two steps away from making the final. And as things stand, we may even be challenging for a treble, who knows?

United XI: Schmeichel, G. Neville, Irwin, Berg, Stam, Scholes, Keane, Giggs, Beckham, Cole, Yorke.

Juventus XI: Peruzzi, Pessotto, Montero, Iuliano, Mirkovic, Deschamps, Davids, Di Livio, Conte, Zidane, Inzaghi.

  • Sir Alex Ferguson said before the game: "Juventus have fantastic experience and have been over the course time and time again."
  • For sure, it's going to be challenging. Just look at this duo of World Cup winners...
  • But, of course, we have our boys to do us proud.
  • Let's see where it all leads us...

1' Kick-off!

2' Beckham with a delightful move to maintain the attack! Early signs.

8' Well oh well, Zidane's quality is showing through. Decent enough for someone who hasn't played for three weeks. Roy Keane should be watchful.

15' Berg must do better here but thankfully, Schmeichel saves Inzaghi's strike here. The Italian escapes Henning too easily on the turn.

19' This cheeky 39-year-old manager can at least be content with his team's early rushes of energy.

25' O la la, Juventus grab the lead via Antonio Conte, 0-1. Davids slices the ball through Scholes's legs, Keane's a tad late to drop back and Conte smashes it past Schmeichel. Advantage Juventus.

30' Giggs crosses for Cole who heads it over from a close range, not without Peruzzi's intervention. Juve's no.1 is proving to be the man...

33' Giggs and Irwin make it a great interchange down the left that sees the Welshman send a parachuting cross into the box. Yorke manages to pass the flying ball sideways but no one to tap it in.

37' Chance for Pessotto! Neville gets lost down the middle exposing his flank completely. How is he going to explain he didn't even hit the target from here?

41' Well, Zidane is going to hurt, especially with tackles like that from Keano.

45+1' Inzaghi what a chance! Another moment for Juve's no.9 as he connects to a brilliant ball from Zidane but prods it wide. Somehow it was Gary Neville battling against the Italian fox in the box.

Half time. United are trailing by one goal and are probably lucky it's just one.

53' Ma che cosa ragazzi, allora vaffanculo, says Conte. Maybe.

56' Scholes goes wide from distance. At least it's something.

58' Peruzzi saves his team twice following whipping crosses from Beckham. United are putting some pressure on.

61' Cole bursts forward but shoots it wide from the left side of Juve's penalty area.

62' Time for a sub maybe?

65' Keane! Smacks it from a long range but Peruzzi is top-notch. Again and again.

69' God knows how many corner kicks both sides have taken so far, the video quality does the opposite to helping resolve the mystery.

71' That's handball inside the box! Blatant and obvious! If only we could show the ref a replay somehow...

79' Zidane shoots wide on a rare Juventus attack! That was supposed to be closer than it was

82' Advanced stats have just arrived

87' GOAL! Oh wait, it's flagged off!? Oh come on, it can't be that, it just can't! Sheringham's strike gets deflected off Roy Keane who's apparently fractionally offside. Such a shame as time's ticking away for us.

90' This just refuses to go in! Scholes heads it strong and Peruzzi is lucky enough to not drop it or land into his own net with the ball in his hands!

90+2 GOAL! GIGGS SMASHES IT HOME! It's all level, 1-1!

Beckham lobs it into the penalty area following a clumsy clearance from the visitors, Peruzzi gets tangled up with the players of either team thus leaving his goal exposed:

Giggsy smells the blood and finds a hole in this human shield to the delight of the crowd!

Scenes

FULL TIME: Man United 1-1 Juventus. The Reds score a highly important goal that doesn't negate Juve's away goal advanatge but at least keep our chances well alive.

Juventus completely bossed the opening half with Zidane causing all sorts of trouble. Giggs and Beckham played too far up leaving Scholes and Keane exposed to a devastating force that Juve midfield contain.

United changed gear after the break as the Italians apparently settled for the result and their tenacity resulted in a deserved equaliser. Can we sway the tie in our favour in two weeks in Italy? We'll find out soon.

See you next time!
