United are looking to sign a midfielder after failing to replace Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera last summer.
West Ham's Declan Rice allegedly remains a priority target as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to build a squad of young British players.
However, the Hammers icon Frank McAvennie insists there's no reason for Rice to move to Old Trafford as the Red Devils are no longer a competitive side.
Speaking on Love Sport Radio about the 20-year-old's future, McAvennie said: "He doesn't have to go anywhere with the money West Ham pay their players now.
"If he wants to go to Man United for trophies, they might be a bigger club but they're not going to win any trophies in the foreseeable future.
"I wouldn't expect him to move on. I don't think he's ready for the big clubs yet, or so-called big ones. I think he's doing wonderful [at West Ham]."
