Why Liverpool have already missed out on new-look Club World Cup in 2025: explained

FIFA confirmed their plans for the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup to take place between June 15 and July 13, 2025. This will be nothing like the competition that Liverpool won back in 2019.

32 teams from around the world will play in a format that resembles that of a regular World Cup between 1998 and 2022: they will be divided into eight groups with four clubs in each, with the winners and runners-up progressing to the Round of 16.

Some of the participants are already known. Two of them represent the Premier League — but Liverpool won't be there.

The places were secured by Chelsea and Man City for winning the Champions League in the 2020/21 and 2022/23 seasons, respectively. Unless Arsenal win it this season, no more Premier League teams can join them due to a limit of two clubs per country. As for the next season's winners, they are supposed to be eligible for the 2029 edition.

It's unlikely Liverpool will be unhappy, though. As a result, the players will have a rare opportunity to have a proper rest in the summer instead of playing for weeks after the season ends.
