Gravenberch omitted from Netherlands squad as punishment for missing last international break to stay at Liverpool

Ryan Gravenberch chose to stay back at Liverpool last month even though he was in line to represent his country at the U21 level.

His decision to do this has come back to bite him this month as he was not included in the senior Netherlands squad, nor is he in their U21s this international break.

Netherlands senior team boss Ronald Koeman had warned of this 'punishment' last month when Gravenberch stayed back at Liverpool.

"Nigel de Jong (technical director) has spoken with Jeremie Frimpong about this. He still wants to play for us, but we decided he will not be called up," Koeman said.

"You can see it as punishment. I believe you are obliged to play for your country."

Jurgen Klopp had also spoken about Ryan's decision to stay back at Liverpool.

“I understand the Dutch were not happy, I can get that, but the boy is a footballer through and through," said Klopp. "He wants to play football all the time and used the break to fix a lot of things we usually do in a proper rush.

“So we didn’t have to do that, which for us, was good.”
