Van Dijk told to quit national team to focus on 'being appreciated'

Virgil van Dijk has come under scrutiny multiple times for his performances in a Netherlands shirt over past few years despite being the captain.

The criticism has largely been from former players and pundits. Anfield Watch writer Charlotte Coates believes Van Dijk should consider quitting his role in the national team so he can focus on Liverpool, where he is appreciated.

"While he has become truly beloved on Merseyside, it is confusing to see how Van Dijk is often treated with a lack of affection back in the Netherlands," wrote Coates.

"The defender is the captain of his country and represents them with pride at every opportunity, but still regularly receives over-the-top criticism from pundits and ex-professionals in his homeland.

"Maybe it is time for Van Dijk to hang his boots up for his nation and concentrate fully on his Liverpool career – where he is now captain of the club.

"Of course, with Euro 2024 coming up next summer, there will be no retirement from the former European Footballer of the Year imminently, but he may well consider his future after the tournament in Germany."

Do you think that would be the right move for Van Djik? Let us know in the comments!
