Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Gareth Southgate said: "The other night [against Malta] Trent Alexander-Arnold just had to tag the pivot really and he did that well.
"Tonight [against North Macedonia] he had to make a lot of decisions and he did it almost immaculately. He regained a lot of balls. His pressing was good.
"So for me, Trent has got everything to play in there [midfield] for England. I actually didn't even think twice about starting him in there.
"It might give us something completely different. The vision and the passing range and the connection with Bukayo Saka for his second goal."
Trent has been a key player in England's two latest games (wins against Malta and North Macedonia in the Euro 2024 qualifiers), impressing in midfield.
The credit, of course, goes to Jurgen Klopp for transforming the 24-year-old from his usual full-back role over the course of the 2022/23 campaign at Liverpool.
