'If you feel like you’re No. 2 or No.3, you’re f****d': Adrian on keeping himself motivated at Liverpool

Adrian has never been Liverpool's first-choice keeper since joining the club in 2019. However, he insists that he has never allowed himself to put his feet up.

"Your mindset has to be that you’re going to be the number one. The feeling has to be that you can be the number one," the Spaniard told the Athletic.

"If you feel like you’re the number two or the number three then you’re fucked to be honest. The motivation and commitment has to be at the highest level with the understanding that players have different roles. It’s like being single and then getting married and needing to adapt.

"This is the best profession in the world. We get paid for doing what we love. Of course there are situations when, if you aren’t playing, you might have an hour or a few minutes, feeling a bit selfish, not thinking about the team.

"But, personally, my character is more thinking about the biggest success we can have as a squad. We know only one goalie can play and we have three great goalies here with some talented youngsters as well so I think the manager can be very calm.

"The competition here makes you better and stronger. It’s important for Ali that he has others competing, pushing him really hard. We all have a good relationship with the goalie staff — John (Achterberg), Jack (Robinson) and Taffa (Claudio Taffarel). We should feel very lucky to have this group. Us goalies are different animals."

Adrian is reported to have agreed a new one-year deal with Liverpool - which is good news considering the uncertainty over the future of Caoimhin Kelleher, Alisson's current main backup.
