Today, it has been announced that the European Super League project is raising its head again after a disastrous launch attempt in April 2021 - which Liverpool was a part of.
This time, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are the front-runners of a 'multi-division competition of 60 to 80 teams with no permanent members, and a minimum of 14 games per club, per season.'
The intention is for this new competition to eventually replace the Champions League. However, the English clubs would again face intense pressure from the Premier League to disavow the breakaway project.
According to Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol, the Premier League clubs could be prohibited from joining any other project.
The reporter said: "These Premier League clubs cannot join a breakaway league. The Premier League handbook has the owners' charter which is something all the owners of Premier League clubs have had to sign. In that charter, point nine says, 'We are collectively committed to the Premier League and recognise our responsibility to support it. We will not engage in the creation of new competition formats outside the Premier League's rules'."
It means that Liverpool, Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal are unlikely to join this new project - which effectively dooms it to failure.
