OFFICIAL: Darwin Nunez wins Portugal's Liga Bwin Player of the Season award

 for his heroics in the 2021/22 campaign.

 last season in the Portuguese top division, already winning the Golden Boot award.

But Nunez has now been declared as the best player of the campaign too after enjoying a prolific period with his former side.

The 23-year-old striker scored 26 goals and provided 4 assists in 28 league games for Benfica last season.

 and in his recent interview with the club website he reveals who he likens Darwin most to.

"I think obviously Darwin, we played against and saw him first hand and I think everything that we saw in those games… he reminded me a little bit of Luis [Diaz] when we played against him when he was at Porto. 

"He’s that sort of a player that you know what you are going to get from – the athleticism, the speed, the strength, the power – and it was the same with him. I remember having to chase Luis back at Anfield at one point and he made me stick it into fifth gear and then try to find sixth to keep up with him! 

"You sort of remember those things and when he walked through the door that was the first thing I remembered – don’t try to get in a race with him if I’m expecting to win! I think Darwin would be the same. I think Virgil said first hand and Ibou said as well how quick and strong he was. 

"I think he had that confidence and swagger about him as well and I think as a striker, as a forward player, you sort of need to have that confidence to go and do good things and lead the team from up there."

 has arrived at Liverpool. While Mane was playing as a false nine during the second half of the last season, Nunez does not have the same experience at that position.

In Benfica, Nunez played in a two-man strike system, drifting to the centre from the left-hand side. Asked how Jurgen Klopp intends to fit the striker in Liverpool's high-intensity system, James Pearce answered.

"Liverpool’s mantra of “our identity is intensity” won’t change. Darwin Nunez will adjust to what’s demanded from him off the ball — Klopp and his staff don’t have any concerns about that. 

"How quickly he starts games is down to him but I don’t envisage a long adaptation period. I think he’s got all the attributes required to make a massive impression at Anfield.

"Nunez’s arrival does give Klopp the option of playing 4-2-3-1 more regularly with the Uruguay frontman as the focal point [pictured below]:

 on the right and then Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino or Fabio Carvalho as the No 10 operating behind Nunez. But he won’t just ditch playing 4-3-3. 

"The manager wants his team to be unpredictable so there are bound to be tactical tweaks for the season ahead.

"Twelve months ago we saw Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role evolve with Salah staying wide more often and the right-back occupying more central areas when attacking. 

"Klopp and Lijnders also brought in the guys from Neuro11 to work on the mental side of taking penalties, free kicks and corners. That relationship will continue and it will be intriguing to see what’s added to the mix this time around."
