Why didn't we go for Saul? What happened to a back-up forward? Answering 3 big Liverpool transfer market questions

Liverpool's window wasn't exactly the most pleasing one for fans, with Ibrahima Konate the only addition to the squad.

Gini Wijnaldum wasn't replaced after he left on a free and questions are burning in the minds of fans. Here's a look at 3 of the biggest ones.

Why didn't we go for Saul?

Liverpool were linked throughout the window with Saul Niguez who ended up moving the Chelsea on deadline day, that too on loan.

Liverpool didn't go for the Atletico midfielder and a large part of why seems to be that they didn't think he was outright better than the players already at the club.

Jurgen Klopp himself said the Reds wouldn't sign a player for the sake of it, talking about the qualities of Ox, Keita and Curtis Jones, thus hinting that was the reason Saul didn't find his way to Anfield.

Why didn't we sign a back-up forward?

Despite dips in form for both Bobby Firmino and Sadio Mane, who will be gone for AFCON along with Mo Salah, the Reds didn't make any forward signings.

The only explanation for this can be that the available options were too expensive to go for. Jack Grealish signed for 100 million pounds, while Romelu Lukaku and Jadon Sancho both cost about the same.

An excellent pre-season from Minamino might also have bee a factor but at this time, it's a very big gamble for the club to rely on just the current options to compete with the firepower our rivals have added.

Why was Gini allowed to leave without a replacement?

Georginio Wijnaldum had become an integral part of this side and him being allowed to talk without a replacement seems to be a major worry for the fanbase.

However, the emergence of Harvey Elliott, the fitness of Thiago and Keita, and the absence of quality options in the market all seem to be factors in not replacing the Dutchman.

Liverpool have 8 players for their 3 midfielders, all with different skillsets and it's likely Jurgen Klopp is looking at this as an opportunity to improve and use them all, health permitting.
