'I don't see Zenit as step back': Dejan Lovren opens up on Liverpool exit

“It's never easy to leave such a big club as Liverpool. But I'm leaving at the best possible time," former Red Dejan Lovren told L'Equipe.

"I'm sad to leave Anfield but I can walk with my head held high. I did my best there, I won the most important trophies and above all I had a great time.

"But I am a man who always wants to prove his worth, so I do not see Zenit as a step back in my career but rather as a new challenge. I want to prove to everyone that I am still capable of playing at the highest level."

Dejan Lovren was a Red for six season and made 185 appearances across all competitions for the club. He had to wait until 2019 to finally lift his first trophy with Liverpool, but the Champions League trophy was folowed by the Premier League triumph in Dejan's last year at Anfield.

The 31-year-old is not doing too badly in Russia: he won a trophy in his very first game for the new team and completed 90 minutes in each match Zenit have played since sealing his trasnfer for €12m.
