Nigeria's captain William Troost-Ekong emerged as the standout player of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024. The 30-year-old defender played a crucial role in Nigeria's journey to the final, starting six out of seven matches and contributing three goals to the tournament.
Despite his impressive individual performance, Troost-Ekong's first-half goal in the final against Ivory Coast wasn't enough for Nigeria, as the hosts secured their third AFCON trophy with second-half goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller.
Nevertheless, Troost-Ekong's exceptional efforts throughout the tournament earned him the well-deserved Player of the Tournament award. Battling through injury, the former Watford and Udinese centre-back led by example, missing only one game and playing every minute in each game he appeared on the field.
According to Fabrizio Romano, there’s a concrete possibility of Troost-Ekong's move to the Saudi Pro League in the summer.
