Sports betting tax to be removed in Ghana, says presidential candidate

Sports betting and lotteries tax could be scrapped in Ghana if the country's Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, becomes the next head of the state.

Dr. Bawumia is running for the presidency with the elections set to take place on December 7, 2024. In his recent speech, he addressed the controversial tax and unveiled his plans for new tax policies come 2025.

"The new policies that I am proposing to implement in 2025 will give us the fiscal space to eliminate some taxes such as the VAT (Value Added Tax) on electricity, the emissions tax and the betting tax without compromising our deficit target," he said.

The betting tax is heavily criticised in Ghana and is particularly unpopular among the youth. The country's authorities are aware of those issues: former President John Mahama has also suggested the sports betting tax could be reviewed.
