Juventus renew Nicolo Fagioli contract despite betting ban

Juventus have extended the contract of Nicolo Fagioli until 2028 and increased his salary. This is despite a ban for betting breaches that expires in May 2024.

Fagioli is one of the most talented players in Italy right now, and his club chose to support the player who is undergoing therapy for his gambling problem.

By his own admission, Fagioli used to place bets on illegal websites and owes nearly €3m. "I stopped sleeping at night. The more time passed, the more the debt obsessed me," admitted the youngster in October 2023. "The money I owed kept increasing and I thought I'd play just to try to recover the money.

"I'll break your legs, they told me. But by now the debt was so much that even if I won the bet I wouldn't get anything. All of this only lowered the amount of money I still owed to these platforms."

Fagioli is one of several Italy internationals who have been embroiled in a betting scandal. Sandro Tonali from Newcastle is another and he is serving a 10-month that rules him out of Euro 2024, should Italy make it.

Other alleged suspects are Nicolo Zaniolo, Federico Gatti, Stephan El Shaarawy and Nicolo Cesale.
