Costa Rica assistant coach dies at half time mark in hospital

Devastating news as Costa Rica assistant coach Erick Rodriguez died aged 49. On Tuesday 12 September, Costa Rica played UAE in a friendly clash in Croatia and around the half-time mark, Rodriguez passed away in a hospital.

Last week, Costa Rica played Saudi Arabia in Newcastle and were scheduled to fly out to Zagreb. However, they had to schedule a layover in Amsterdam. Rodriguez experienced health complications (not specified of what kind) and remained in the Netherlands to be assessed by doctors.

As the game was being played, Rodriguez's condition worsened and he died next to his wife who had only travelled to Amsterdam on Monday.

"The Costa Rican Football Federation regrets this news and, at the same time, works on the repatriation of the body, in conjunction with the Embassy of Costa Rica in the Netherlands," reads the statement.

The federation also tweeted: "This is a sad day for us and it's not about the result [Costa Rica lost 4-1]. We have lost a friend, a great professional and, above all, a great person. Rest in peace, Erick."
