'A kid inside needs love': Recalling what Jose Mourinho said about Lukaku as Big Rom lands in Rome

Romelu Lukaku is set to be announced as an AS Roma player, on loan from Chelsea. The Belgian is already in Rome after the club owner personally piloted the plane carrying Lukaku.

Lukaku is not everyone's cup of tea — ask fans of Chelsea, Inter Milan, Everton and Man United — but you cannot deny he can score goals. And Jose Mourinho may be the best thing to happen to the unruly Belgian.

Mourinho told the Times in 2021: "[In his first spell] at Chelsea, he [Lukaku] was still a kid. At Manchester United, he was still developing. At Inter he became the top man.

"He became loved - a big love from the supporters, love from teammates, great relations with the coach.

"He's a big guy, physically so strong, but there is also a kid inside who needs that love, needs that support, needs to feel important."

Lukaku has already played for Mourinho in two spells: for Chelsea and Man United. Jose didn't need Lukaku at Chelsea because, as he explained, the striker was too young at the time.

At Man United, however, in their only joint season, Lukaku bagged 27 goals in 51 appearances, including 16 in the Premier League.

Mourinho may have a strong team at Roma but he desperately needs a prolific striker as his team's finishing is beyond tragic and the only reliable goalscorer Tammy Abraham is injured for the rest of 2023.
