2 clubs from same country drawn against each other in European qualifier for first time ever

Europa League qualifiers have come to the final hurdle as the draw has been made.

One match-up may have caught the eyes of watchful fans. The winner of the Slavia Praha vs Dnipro-1 will face Zorya Luhansk. The problem? Dnipro-1 and Zorya are both from Ukraine.

How is that possible? It is not forbidden in the first place: teams from the same country can meet in a qualifying round of the Europa League. It could happen last year but it's only happened now for the first time ever.

The probabilities were slightly more in favour of such a scenario if you consider that teams from Ukraine and Belarus cannot be drawn against each other in a UEFA competition which meant one opponent less for both Ukrainian sides.

This sounds unfair as at least one team from Ukraine will have to bow out before the group stage but both Dnipro-1 and Zorya could still play in Europe next season.

The loser of the Slavia vs Dinpro-1 clash will head to the final Conference League qualifying round and play the winner of Lech Poznan vs FC Spartak Trnava there.
