Marco Reus has made the decision to step down as captain, after a disappointing end of the season for Dortmund. It seemed like the team was on the verge of ending Bayern Munich's ten-year dominance in the Bundesliga.
They entered the final day of the season ahead of their rivals, raising hopes of a breakthrough. Unfortunately, disaster struck when Jamal Musiala scored a late winning goal, securing Bayern their 11th consecutive title.
On the club's s social media page Reus said: "Hello BVB fans, It is very important for me to tell you something personally. I had a lot to think about during my vacation, and I have decided to pass on the captain’s armband."
"I informed Edin Terzić and Sebastian Kehl about this yesterday. I was allowed to wear this armband for five years with pride and honour. Thank you for your support over the years. I wish Sebastian and Edin that they find a good successor. I am sure they will succeed."
Reus was appointed as the captain at the start of the 2018/19 season, and he has retained the position ever since. In April, Reus signed a contract extension for one year, which means his contract will end next summer. This could potentially mark the conclusion of his tenure at Signal Iduna Park.
