Mario Gomez: 'Neuer is on the same level as Messi in terms of importance to football history'

In one of the most controversial statements of the day, former Germany great Mario Gomez compares Manuel Neuer's football legacy to Leo Messi's.

"I would put Manuel Neuer on the same level as Lionel Messi in terms of importance in the football history. I don't even know if we are all aware of what we experienced with a goalkeeper who revolutionised the game. We will only understand this 20 years from now."

Sure, Neuer was one of those who brought the goalkeeper position to a whole new level, but it's still not enough to compare him to the best player in history who is also one of the most complete players ever.

Moreover, Messi definitely has spent more years in his prime than Neuer, even though both are still going strong in their 30s.
