In an exclusive interview for Star+, Rodrigo De Paul has shared a touching story about Lionel Messi. Just two days before the World Cup quarterfinal encounter with the Netherlands, the Argentine faced an unexpected injury.
“I got injured in the training, I took an MRI, and the doctor tells me that I had a torn muscle grade 1. He told me that I had to miss the game, and in 5-6 days, I would be better.
“But I didn’t want to miss it. I didn’t know if we would eliminate the Netherlands. I was thinking I could’ve already played my last World Cup game. I don’t know what would happen in 4 years.
“And then Messi tells me: 'Don’t play, I will take you to the semi-final. Don’t risk it, you are going to play the semi-final."
The midfielder underwent tests and miraculously received a green light to participate in the game.
True to his word, Leo Messi kept his promise to De Paul, leading Argentina to the semis, finals, and ultimately securing the title.
