Messi set to smash world record by selling his jerseys

Lionel Messi is about to smash the world record for the costliest jersey auction in history. The Argentine will auction six jerseys he wore during the World Cup in Qatar 2022 for an eye-watering $10m (£8m) or more, per Sports Mail.

The six shirts include jerseys Leo wore in two group stage games, the quarter-final, semi-final and final.

If Messi auctions the shirt for more than £8m, he will smash the record set by Michael Jordan, who sold his jersey worn in a basketball game for Chicago Bulls in 1998 for £8.1m. The shirt was sold last year.

Even if Messi doesn't break the record, his memorabilia will smash the record for a football jersey auction set by Diego Maradona’s Hand of God jersey which sold for £7m to an anonymous bidder.

"The 2022 FIFA World Cup stands as one of the greatest events in sports history, intrinsically connected to Messi's valiant journey and firmly establishing his status as the greatest player of all-time," Brahm Wachter, head of the company organising the auction said.

"The sale of these six shirts stands as a monumental occasion in auction history, offering fans and collectors a connection to Messi's crowning achievement. It is an honour for Sotheby's to present and exhibit these invaluable collectables to the public, which encapsulate the sheer brilliance of a player who has redefined the boundaries of football excellence, Watchter added"
