Juan Roman Riquelme blames Barca superstar for the way modern football is — not Messi

Former Barcelona midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme has an interesting theory over how the modern-day football style and has blamed one player for influencing the change from his days.

He told ESPN: “I'm not too happy with modern football because I think I wouldn't play today. I can't see where they would play me in a 4-3-3.

“I'm lucky I was born 15-20 years earlier because back then we played with lots of no. 10s. I don't know where I would play in a 4-3-3 nowadays. I couldn't play as a right winger. Football has changed.

“Some players make the games run smoothly which, as a consequence, brought a problem. I believe Busquets brought the problem.

“In the past, the number 5 had to score, pass the ball to a number 10. But not today: today it seems like a number 5 has to touch the ball more often than a number 10.”

Riquelme used to play as an ‘enganche’ during his time, which is the name for the classic no.10 in Argentina, a highly individualistic player who can work all the magic in his team. Lionel Messi reportedly told Barca players that this was his favourite role during his time in the academy too.

Busquets definitely brought a major change to how football is played, and that is why he’s considered as one of the best in his position in the history of football.
