A photo of Ilkay Gundogan wearing a Japan shirt went viral after Germany got thrashed 4-1 by Japan.
Fans keep wondering why a German international put on another country's shirt.
goatnelli: "Gundogan switched sides mid-game!"
Jay_Pee_JP: "Gundogan's son is a Japanese fan."
kabNFA: "Gundogan played for Germany but supported Japan"
Bakhti_13: "Gundogan supporting Japan?"
LFCPoppy: "Gundo is Japan's biggest fan"
The explanation is much simpler though. This photo was taken in June 2015 at a World Cup qualifier match when Japan were held to a 0-0 draw by Singapore.
Ilkay Gundogan, who was at Borussia Dortmund back then, wore a Japan shirt as a sign of support for his team-mate Shinji Kagawa. The two played together until the summer of 2016 when Gundogan joined Manchester City.
