Lionel Messi's free-kick goal in Argentina's 1-1 draw with Chile in their 2021 Copa America opener on Monday was the 33-year-old's 57th career strike from the set-piece.

Therefore, the Barcelona captain has now surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo in the all-time free-kick charts as the Juventus forward is now on 56 career goals.

Messi has netted 50 direct free-kick goals for Barca with seven others coming in for the Albiceleste.

Now, Leo is five goals short of Diego Maradona's career record of 62 direct free-kick goals. Former Brazil international Juninho Pernambucano, meanwhile, continues to lead the all-time free-kick charts with 77 strikes.

Lionel Messi's stunning free-kick goal earned Argentina a 1-1 draw against Chile in their 2021 Copa America opener on Monday night.

That was the sides' second head-to-head meeting in two weeks as they also shared points in a 1-1 stalemate in the 2022 World Cup qualifier on June 4.

Many fans on social media are convinced that Messi was eager to gain revenge on his former Barcelona teammate this time around.

Chile puts up massive wall to defend Messi's free-kick – fan pokes big hole in it like Leo did

Lionel Messi's beautiful free-kick goal helped Argentina to draw Chile 1-1 in their 2021 Copa America opener on Monday night.

As Twitter user @GetsMessi pointed out, Leo took advantage of Arturo Vidal's height when sending the ball into the right top corner in the 33rd minute, just over his former Barcelona teammate.

"Vidal the midget in the middle of the wall. What kind of idiocy is this. And look who Messi went over the top of in the wall - Vidal the Halloween Garden Gnome. Coaches are clowns," he tweeted.
