Why do we need Wijnaldum?
The likes of Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal are almost certainly gone. We are left with just 4 first-choice options in midfield (De Jong, Busquets, Pjanic, Puig) and it makes sense to fill in the last gap with a versatile player like Wijnaldum.
What's good about Wijnaldum?
As we said, it's his versatility. While playing in a more defensive role at Liverpool, the Dutchman is blossoming upfront under Ronald Koeman who's used to playing him higher than usual.
Line-up options
Option 1
Asymmetric formations are often useful, especially when one wants to use their midfield potential to the max.
But actually, it's well-balanced. Both Wijnaldum and Pjanic could take roles of roaming playmakers and create chances for Barca's frontline regardless of who'll be our major threat there – Lautaro Martinez or someone else.

... but it's all different at the national side under Koeman where he plays some truly dynamic football. In 2019, Wijnaldum recorded 3 assists, 2 of them against Germany.
Option 2
Speedy wings, defence on the lock, Wijnaldum as Barca's most creative man in midfield – this all looks very similar to what Koeman showed with the Netherlands.
It's worth a mention that Wijnaldum's long shots are something to point out – in Rakitic's absence there'll be no players who could boast about this skill.

Option 3
Ter Stegen; Lenglet, Pique; Alba, Wijnaldum; Semedo; Puig, Pjanic; Coutinho, Lautaro, Trincao.
If you think there's no need to risk by putting Wijnaldum high up the pitch, he could also play a pivot in a 4-3-3 formation that has always been familiar to Jurgen Klopp.
Wijnaldum is always a man to rely on in this position.
