"I was training with Chelsea before I got loaned," Malang Sarr told L'Equipe about his decision to join Porto last summer.
"The loan was part of the plan. I had to be honest with myself, my season ended in March and I wasn’t going to be successful right away with Chelsea.
"It was the perfect solution because I wanted to do a season at a top club like Porto, to be good and then later take a place at Chelsea."
Malang Sarr was loaned out to Porto almost immediately after joining Chelsea as a free agent last year. He's not a regular starter there, though, as he has only made 8 league appearances.
On the other hand, the 22-year-old featured in a dramatic Champions League tie with Juventus and helped Porto progress to the quarterfinal. Still, Chelsea probably hoped for a bigger involvement for their player who does not look much closer to featuring for the Blues than he did last summer.
