'This could really backfire', 'thank goodness he's gone': Global Chelsea community react to Barkley's loan move to Villa

Tribuna.com

@Ziza Dek: "I don't know how people will take it but I feel Barkley was not supposed to go on loan. It could have been someone else. Maybe Loftus or even Jorginho. Look at how Barkley changes game whenever he gets in when we down or at draw."

@Darren Fernandes: "Nice, we literally loaned our back up attacking midfielder who actually scored when called upon in league cup matches."

@Tommy Novardo: "This thing had to happen. We have Kovacic, Kante, Havertz, Mount, and Jorginho if we play 3 midfields.

"Sending Barkley on loan will be the best decision for him and the club. Other than that, Barkley doesn't have the elements to be in Frank's system.

"He doesn't have good shooting skills, bad defending abilities, and poor decision making when on doing the attacks. Let's see if Ruben follows his way to get loaned somewhere else."

@/5134-cfccan: "Rather a strange choice but we don't know who forced/agreed to the loan. Will certainly help Villa and who knows him and Grealish might be a good pairing.  I thought for the money we paid for him he's performed reasonably well and was very good in some games coming up with a few crucial goals.

"As others have stated, he has never been able to reach his full potential and I think that's down to reading the game and sometimes a lack of awareness rather than his actual footballing skills..nevertheless a strange choice but hopefully some wages off the books."

@13779-chelsbear: "Sums the season up so far. No idea what direction we are going in."

@__alex__heine__02__: "Thank you. I don’t want to hate on players but I feel like Barkley isn’t a Chelsea calibre. Felt a lot last season he would have one good FA Cup game and get a goal and then Lampard would play him in a Prem game or two and both times he would be awful and it was just a recurring problem. Plus it gives some other players to potentially get more game time."

@3965-superblue_1986: "Disappointed about this. I'm probably in the minority judging by the abuse that he gets at times on this forum, but I think Barkley is a good rotational squad player to have.

"He blows hot and cold and he certainly isn't regular starter material but when he plays well he can be very good and is capable of playing both a deeper and more offensive role in the midfield.

"I would much rather hold trust in him at present than I would in Loftus-Cheek who I think is far more desperate for the loan move away to get regular game time and to see if he will ever return back to what we were starting to see in the second half of Sarri's season."

We Ain't Got No History

@Divik Tyagi: "This move makes sense just for Barkley as he wants to start for England in the Euros next summer.

"But for Chelsea or Frank, this does not. He would have been excellent coming off the bench and the first one off the bench to replace Mount or Havertz. This would have kept all three of them fresh over the season (assuming RLC would have gone on a loan).

"Barkley could have played cup games and few Premier League games. We know exactly what we will get from Barkley but the same is not true about RLC. Plus RLC needed the loan more than Barkley.

"Well on the plus side, if he does well then we might get a couple of millions more for him next season when we sell him."

@Roysten Disa: "Thank goodness he's gone. He's an Everton level (mid-table) player and it shows in almost all his performances. He'll do well at Aston Villa and should make it permanent."

@Dean Morris: "I'm not happy with this decision at all. Especially when Jorginho remains and plays regularly. Ross is proactive, transitions at speed and has a good eye for a cutting pass, the complete opposite of the very negative Jorginho! Time will tell if this was a big mistake by the club and Frank. My gut feeling is that it is."

@Degoul Da Prince: "Clearly a lot of mixed feelings about this decision. This season it’s clear we want to play in the 4-2-3-1 formation which increases the need for a couple of number tens. In my opinion, Ross is a different kind of number 10 and he plays better in that position than someone like Mason (even though Mason is a better all-round player).

"I feel letting him go wasn’t the best, though. In games like the one we had yesterday, he would have been very useful. We saw in the game against Liverpool last season."

@jMS_44: "The only positive I can see in this transfer is that if Barkley has a good season (which he will likely have for Villa), we will have absolutely no problem selling him in the future for a good profit, should we decide to part ways."

@Nevinhooo: "This could really backfire, he was the perfect bench option for us, now we’ll have to rely on an incredibly rusty RLC as a spark off the bench. Hopefully, his confidence will build as the season progresses but I can’t help feel like RLC should’ve been the one who went on loan."

@yellowyeahyeahyeah: "I want RLC to succeed and Frank obviously rates him very highly but this is unexpected. Barkley was great for rotation and popped up with some important goals."
