Robin van Persie becomes club manager for the first time

Robin van Persie has signed a two-year contract with Eredivisie side Heerenveen, who are currently 10th in the table, to take over as their new head coach.

The former Arsenal man is set to manage a club for the first time, having spent the majority of last year working to get his coaching badges.

Van Persie was once loved by Arsenal fans but he left on a bitter note to join Manchester United in 2012, even lifting the Premier League title that season.

Van Persie, who scored 132 goals for Arsenal, is delighted with his appointment: "I would like to continue my development and the role of head coach fits in perfectly with that goal.

"I am, therefore, pleased with the opportunity that Heerenveen offers me. Heerenveen is a very nice Eredivisie club, with a rich tradition and loyal supporters.

"It is a fantastic challenge to contribute to the sporting ambitions and development of the club as head coach."
