Martial on the left, McFred returns: Solskjaer's formation in Everton draw explained

Manchester United played out a disappointing 1-1 draw against Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils took the lead through Anthony Martial in the first half, but were unable to sustain it as Rafa Benitez’s side went away with a single point.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection raised quite a few eyebrows, as he benched Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba – with Martial, Edinson Cavani, and Fred coming back into the team.

United enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half and got a deserved late on. After the break, Solskjaer was keen to double his side’s lead.

Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho replaced Martial and Cavani before the hour-mark – minutes after which Andros Townsend got the equalizer.

United pushed forward in numbers seeking a winner after that. Pogba replaced Fred with around 20 minutes to go.

Towards the end, the Red Devils had a very attack-minded approach as Pogba accompanied Bruno Fernandes in an advanced midfield role.

Sancho and Mason Greenwood mostly stayed wide trying to deliver crosses into the middle along with Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Red Devils had a few chances towards the end, but were unable to convert it and had to settle for a point.
