Loris Karius set to play v United in League Cup final after Nick Pope's red card v Liverpool

Nick Pope was sent off in Newcastle's 2-0 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday and this red card is going to have massive consequences for the ex-Red Loris Karius.

The German goalkeeper, who left Liverpool on contract expiry last summer and joined the Magpies, is their third-choice goalkeeper, behind Pope and Martin Dubravka.

But Pope is suspended and Dubravka is cup-tied for the upcoming League Cup final against Man United. It means that Karius will most likely start.

Karius last time played a competitive football game almost two years ago: on 28 February, 2021, when he was on loan with Union Berlin.

Here's what Liverpool fans are saying about this unlikely twist of fate.

22Hamza: "This script... An Alisson pass means Karius is gonna get redemption story in the Cup final"

FSG Out: "Karius is gunna have to play the final against United… we’re about to witness the greatest comeback since Andros Townsends's hairline."

Leanne Prescott: "Loris Karius redemption arc at Wembley then."
