'That's all I did when I was a child': Matheus Nunes opens up about tough challenges in Brazil

Matheus Nunes is now part of Manchester City's squad, making him their third big signing this summer.

But getting here wasn't easy for him. Nunes was born in Rio de Janeiro, and like many kids dreaming of football success, he faced tough challenges. He used football as his way out of a difficult situation.

Quoted by the official Man City website, Nunes said: "That's all I did when I was a child I kicked a ball as often as I could because it was a way for us to escape. My childhood was tough and for many children in Brazil, it can be tough because their families don't have a lot of money."

"So, as I say, for me and my brothers and friends, football was a possible way for us to escape."

"I'd play every day for as long as possible, sometimes in the street, sometimes on the field - or sometimes in the house, which would make my mum mad because I wasn't supposed to be there! This is the way it is in Brazil."

Nunes joined Wolves in the summer of 2022, but things changed for Manchester City. With Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez leaving and Kevin De Bruyne facing a long injury layoff, Pep Guardiola wanted to strengthen the team's midfield.
