Barca 'strip' Dani Alves of legendary status after rape conviction

Barcelona have stripped Dani Alves of his legendary status at the club, Diario Sport say.

Barca did not rush into the decision but waited until Alves was eventually convicted and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for rape.

Barca's list of legends contains the names of 102 players who have represented the club since its inception in 1899. Players like Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets were recently added to the list. Lionel Messi was already on the list before leaving the club in 2021.

Unfortunately, Alves will no longer enjoy the privilege that comes with being a Barca legend and will no longer be addressed as such.

In December 2022, Alves ruined his life when he walked into a nightclub in Barcelona days after playing for his country at the World Cup. The Brazilian was accused of raping a young woman in a bathroom during that crazy night before being thrown in prison.

Alves admitted to having sexual intercourse with the said victim but claimed it was consensual even though he was drunk at the time. Joana Sanz wife of the ex-footballer divorced him over the saga and proceeded to delete every picture of him on her Instagram.

There may yet be a glimmer of hope for the 40-year-old as Alves' lawyer insists there will be an appeal.

Alves played 408 games for Barca in eight and a half years and won every trophy he competed for including three Champions League and six La Liga titles. He remains the second most decorated footballer in history behind Messi.
