'Maybe mirrored Brentford': Chelsea told new system suits Chilwell and Gusto

Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea reverted to a back-three in the draw with Brentford at the weekend.

Journalist Julian Laurens thinks it is a system that suits attacking fullbacks such as Ben Chilwell and Malo Gusto well.

“I think this suits Chilwell and Gusto," said Lauren. "Maybe he wanted to mirror what Brentford were doing, I don’t know.

"I didn’t say I like it or not, I just said that that suits Chilwell and Gusto.”

Pochettino has already shared his thinking behind the move, as he spoke to the press after the 2-2 draw.

“It was to try and provide the team a different way to play and to have an alternative in the way to use," explained the boss.

“We needed to provide the midfield the possibility not to cover too much distance.

"[Conor] Gallagher didn’t start against Leeds because he was very, very tired. Because players like Lavia was supposed to be a very good player, and of course Lesley Ugochukwu."
