Maatsen turns down Chelsea 7-year contract offer (reliability: 5 stars)

The Athletic report that Ian Maatsen has rejected several contract extension offers from Chelsea. One particular proposal he turned down was a six-year deal with a club option to renew it.

The Dutchman's current deal runs out in 2024 so he could theoretically leave Chelsea on free transfer next summer, if he doesn't agree a new deal. However, the Athletic say that the Blues have a one-year extension clause in his current deal — so they could automatically renew it through to 2025.

The 21-year-old impressed on loan with Burnley last season and has been given a chance to stake a first-team place at the Bridge.

So far this season, Maatsen has made four Premier League appearances, coming off the bench late in the game on all four occasions. He's also started the League Cup clash against Wimbledon.

The Dutchman's natural position is that of a left-back but Pochettino has also used him as a forward and a central midfielder.
