'It meant everything': Harry Maguire reveals how David Beckham reached out to him after Scotland abuse

Speaking to the Guardian, Harry Maguire said: "I actually spoke with David Beckham about three weeks ago after the Scotland game.

"He got in touch with me so it was really nice of him and I really appreciated that. If you watch the documentary David explains a lot of how he dealt with it.

“It meant everything, I've spoken about Beckham being someone I looked up to and watched when I was a young boy. He was a big role model.

"It [his message] was touching. The main thing he did is he reminded me of the career I've had to date and the big moments I've had in my career.

"[As a football player], when you're going through tough moments you've got to go through past experiences and where you’ve gone in your career."

Last month, Maguire was jeered by both sets of fans after scoring an own goal in England's 3–1 win against Scotland away from home.

The former Manchester United skipper has had a slight uptick in form since that game, clawing his way back into Erik ten Hag's starting XI.
