FSG working to hire Benfica technical director — he already dealt with Liverpool (reliability: 5 stars)

According to The Athletic, FSG is working on a move for Benfica technical director Pedro Marques.

This would be the latest move to set up the new structure at Liverpool and beyond, with Michael Edwards returning as CEO of football and Richard Hughes set to be appointed sporting director.

Marques would be employed by FSG rather than Liverpool, as he would help Edwards oversee a second club in the group.

Marques is familiar with Premier League football from his time with the City Football Group from 2010 to 2018. During his time at Man City, Marques got to know their scout Julian Ward who eventually succeeded Edwards as Liverpool's sporting director.

That link-up became crucial as Liverpool negotiated a move for Darwin Nunez in 2022, with Marques moving to Benfica by then.

Marques' connections and an eye for talent, as well as experience working for a multi-club model, make him an attractive hire for FSG and Edwards.
